Marine Life You Can See Diving in Kenya: A Species Guide

Kenya’s reefs pack an impressive amount of life into a relatively small stretch of coastline. Here’s a guide to what you’re likely to encounter on a typical dive around Diani and Mombasa, organized from the everyday sightings to the seasonal showstoppers.

Seen on nearly every dive

Green and hawksbill turtles are one of the most reliable sightings on this coast – grazing on seagrass, resting under coral ledges, or gliding past mid-water.

Moray eels are common too, usually spotted with just their head poking from a crevice in the reef.

Clownfish, sheltering in anemones, and schools of snapper and surgeonfish round out the everyday reef scene.

Photography tips

If you’re bringing a camera, a wide-angle lens or setting suits turtles, reef scenes and any larger pelagics, while a macro setting is better for nudibranchs and smaller reef life. Ask your guide before the dive what’s been active recently at that site – local knowledge often beats guesswork.

See it for yourself

Every dive here is a little different depending on the site, season, and conditions on the day – which is part of what makes returning to dive this coast worthwhile even after your first trip.
