Humpback Whale Watching in Mombasa: Season Guide
Whale sharks get most of the attention on Kenya’s coast, but they’re not the only giants passing through. Each year, humpback whales migrate along the East African coastline – and with good timing, they’re sometimes visible from boats off Mombasa and Diani.
When do humpback whales pass through?
Humpback sightings cluster around July to September, as whales migrate along the coast between feeding and breeding grounds. This is a seasonal, weather- and route-dependent phenomenon rather than a guaranteed daily occurrence – whales pass at a distance, following their own migratory path rather than a fixed schedule.
What are the chances of seeing one?
Sightings are opportunistic rather than guaranteed. Boat crews with local experience know which times of day and general areas have historically had more activity, but no operator can promise a humpback sighting on any specific trip. If you’re diving or boating during this window, keep an eye on the horizon between dives – spouts and breaches are sometimes visible from a distance even without a dedicated whale-watching trip.
What does a sighting look like?
Humpback whales are known for dramatic surface behavior – breaching, tail slapping, and visible blows (the spray from their exhale) that can be seen from a good distance. Most sightings from dive or snorkel boats are surface encounters rather than in-water – humpbacks are wild, powerful animals, and respectful distance is the standard for any responsible operator.
