Diving prices in Kenya vary depending on what’s included, so it’s worth understanding roughly what the market looks like before you book – and what questions to ask so you’re comparing like for like.
Typical price ranges across the market
Discover Scuba Diving (no certification) : roughly $150–$200, for a half-day introduction including a supervised open water dive.
PADI Scuba Diver (entry-level certification) : around $300, covering a shorter course than full Open Water with a more limited depth qualification.
PADI Open Water Diver (full certification) : typically $400–$600, depending on what’s bundled in – this is the widest-ranging price point in the market, so it’s worth checking inclusions closely (see below).
Dive trips for certified divers : generally $50–$130 for a single or double-tank trip, depending on the operator and what’s included.
What should be included in the price?
When comparing quotes, check whether these are bundled in or charged separately:
- All rental equipment (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins, mask, tank, weights)
- Transfers to and from the dive base
- Marine park entrance fees
- Boat fuel and crew
- Refreshments (water, fruit) between dives
- PADI course materials and certification processing fees
A course priced noticeably below the market range is worth a closer look – it may mean gear rental, transfers, or certification fees are charged on top, which can add up to more than a slightly higher all-inclusive quote.
Why prices vary between operators
Course pricing is driven mostly by instructor time, boat operating costs, equipment maintenance and local overheads – not primarily by which certification agency (PADI, SSI, etc.) is used. A well-run, safety-focused operation with smaller groups and well-maintained equipment will generally sit toward the higher end of the range, and that’s usually money well spent for something as safety-dependent as diving.
Ways to save without cutting corners on safety
- Book courses and multiple dive trips together – many operators, including us, offer better per-dive rates for bundled bookings.
- Travel in shoulder season (May–June, September) when rates and group sizes both tend to be more favorable.
- Ask about group or family rates if you’re traveling with others.
