Best Time to Dive Diani Beach: A Season-by-Season Guide
If you’re planning a diving holiday on Kenya’s south coast, timing your trip well can be the difference between murky water and 20-metre visibility – or missing a whale shark by a few weeks. Here’s what to expect from the Diani and Mombasa dive sites throughout the year, so you can plan around what you most want to see.
The short answer
The best overall diving conditions in Diani run from October to April, when the Indian Ocean is calmest, visibility is at its best, and water temperatures are warmest. That said, Calico Jacks runs dives year-round, and different months bring different highlights – so “best” really depends on what you’re hoping to see.
Month-by-month guide
October to April – peak diving season
This is the sweet spot for underwater visibility and calm seas, making it the most popular window for both beginner and advanced divers. Warm water and good conditions make it an easy time to learn to dive or complete an Open Water certification.
November to March – whale shark season
Whale sharks move into the shallower waters off Diani during these months, with sightings most consistent from January into March. These gentle giants – filter feeders that can grow to well over 10 metres – are one of the most sought-after encounters on this coastline. Sightings aren’t guaranteed on any single day, so if swimming with a whale shark is your priority, building a few extra days of flexibility into your trip improves your odds.
July to September – humpback whale migration
As humpback whales migrate along the East African coast, sightings become possible from boats operating off Diani and the north coast. This overlaps with slightly cooler, choppier conditions than peak season, so pack a light wetsuit layer if you’re diving during these months.
May to August – turtle nesting season
Green and hawksbill turtles nest along this stretch of coast during these months, and it’s possible to see hatchlings making their way to the water on the beaches near our dive bases. Turtles themselves are seen on dives year-round, but nesting season adds an extra reason to time a visit here.
What about water temperature?
Water temperatures off Diani and Mombasa stay warm for a tropical destination, generally ranging from the high 20s to around 29°C (mid-to-high 80s Fahrenheit) depending on the season, cooling slightly during the July–September period. Most divers are comfortable in a 3mm shorty or full wetsuit year-round; if you run cold, bring a 5mm.
Our recommendation
- First-time or beginner divers : aim for October–April for the calmest, clearest conditions to learn in.
- Whale shark seekers : book January–March and build in a couple of spare days for the best odds.
- Combining a safari with diving : October–February also happens to be prime dry-season safari weather inland, making it easy to combine both.
- Budget-conscious or flexible travelers : the quieter shoulder months (May–June, September) often mean better rates and smaller groups, with diving still very much on year-round.
