A Day in the Life: What to Expect on Your First Dive Trip with Calico Jacks
Not sure what an actual dive day looks like, logistically? Here’s a realistic walk-through of what to expect, start to finish, on a trip with us.
Morning: pickup and briefing
Your day starts with a hassle-free transfer from your hotel to our dive base – no need to arrange your own transport. Once you arrive, you’ll be introduced to your instructor or dive guide and given a briefing covering the day’s plan: which sites you’re heading to, expected conditions, and what marine life has been active recently.
If you’re a beginner, this is also when any remaining paperwork (medical questionnaire, waivers) gets finished up – best done calmly before you’re geared up, not rushed at the last minute.
Gearing up
All equipment – BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins, mask, tank and weights – is fitted and checked before you board the boat. Instructors and guides do a final equipment check with every diver, regardless of experience level, as standard practice.
The boat ride out
Boat rides to dive sites typically take anywhere from a few minutes to around 30–45 minutes depending on which site you’re heading to. This is a good time to relax, take in the coastline, and ask your guide any last questions about the site or conditions.
The dive(s)
Most trips include two dives with a surface interval in between, though beginners doing training dives will follow a slightly different, more paced structure. Throughout the dive, your guide manages navigation and pacing so you can focus on enjoying the reef rather than logistics — checking depth, watching for marine life, and simply taking it in.
Surface interval
Between dives, you’ll have a proper rest period on the boat – required for safety reasons to let your body off-gas nitrogen before the second dive. This is when the fresh fruit, water, and light refreshments come out, and it’s often when the best stories from the first dive get shared among the group.
Back to base and debrief
After the second dive, you’ll head back to the dive base, log your dive if you’re keeping a logbook, and get a quick debrief on what you saw and how the dive went – especially useful feedback if you’re mid-course and working on specific skills.
Transfer back
Your transfer back to your hotel is included, so your day wraps up as smoothly as it started – no logistics to sort out on your own.

One thing that shapes the whole day: we keep our groups small, which means more personal attention from your guide, less waiting around, and a more relaxed pace overall rather than feeling like one of a crowd.
